The Wilson Trail: Pat Sin Leng to Nam Chung

Wilson Trail | Section 10 | 6.8km | Medium

After more than 70 kilometers of adventure, we’ve reached the final section of the Wilson Trail! Section 10 takes us off the stunning Pat Sin Leng, also known as the Ridge of the Eight Immortals, and descends into the quiet village of Nam Chung, near Hong Kong’s border with Shenzhen. At just under 7.0 kilometers, this section is rated as medium difficulty, primarily due to its rocky and uneven paths. While the descent might seem like an easy finish, the terrain can be tricky, especially with over 70 kilometers already in your legs.

This section offers a mix of rugged trails and peaceful countryside scenery, providing a fitting end to the Wilson Trail journey. As you make your way down, you’ll pass through lush forests and open hillsides, with occasional glimpses of the borderlands. It’s a chance to reflect on the incredible distance you’ve covered while savoring the natural beauty of Hong Kong’s northern frontier.

So, take your time, tread carefully, and enjoy the final steps of this epic trail.

Why Hike Section 10 Of The Wilson Trail

Section 10 of the Wilson Trail is the finale of an incredible 78-kilometer journey that started on Hong Kong Island near Stanley and finishes just kilometers away from Hong Kong's border with Shenzhen in the North.

Section 10 offers a fitting end to this epic adventure. While it may be one of the shorter sections at just under 7.0 kilometers, the descent from the iconic Pat Sin Leng, or the Ridge of the Eight Immortals, into the tranquil village of Nam Chung is a rewarding experience, blending rugged terrain with serene countryside views.

After Section 9, with its stunning views and beautiful hiking paths on Pat Sin Leng, Section 10 can be a little anti-climatic. We like to think of Section 10 as a victory lap—a quieter, more reflective conclusion to the epic journey of the Wilson Trail.

Section 10 offers a peaceful descent through lush forests and serene countryside. Take it as an opportunity to unwind and savor the sense of accomplishment that comes with nearing the finish line of this epic adventure! In some ways, Section 10 is a gentle reminder that every great adventure has its calm after the storm, making it a fitting end to an unforgettable trail. It’s a chance to reflect on the journey while enjoying the quiet beauty of Hong Kong’s northern frontier, far away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island.

The terrain can be tricky at times, with rocky and uneven paths. So, take your time, tread carefully, and savor every step of this final stretch. The finish line at Nam Chung is not just the end of a trail—it’s the culmination of an unforgettable adventure!

Wilson Trail: Getting Back Home From Nam Chung

The official finish line of the Wilson Trail is just outside the tiny and remote village of Nam Chung. Don't expect restaurants, public transport, or a greeting committee. In fact, you'll wonder why exactly the trail finishes where it finishes, rather than a few more kilometers down the road, where you can find a toilet, restaurants, and (limited) public transport options.

While Nam Chung is a relatively remote village near the border with Shenzhen, there are several public transport options to help you return to the city. Here’s how you can do it:

Minibus 56K to Fanling Station is your best option to reach an MTR station. From Nam Chung, take the green minibus 56K, which runs to Fanling MTR Station. This is the most direct option and takes about 20-30 minutes. Once at Fanling Station, you can take the East Rail Line southbound to Kowloon Tong Station, then transfer to the Kwun Tong Line to reach Hong Kong Island.

If minibus 56K is not available, you can walk or take a taxi to Sha Tau Kok Road and catch bus 78K to Fanling Station. This is a less direct option but can be useful if other services are not running.

Alternatively, a taxi to Fanling or Tai Po Market Station is a good alternative. Both stations are well-connected to Hong Kong Island via the East Rail Line. However, finding a taxi in Nam Chung can be challenging.

The journey back may require a bit of planning. If you're relying on public transport or taxis, it is highly recommended to finish during day time at Nam Chung. If you don't want to take the risk of being stuck at Nam Chung, it is better to run the Wilson Trail in reverse. From near Stanley, the Wilson Trail's start, you will always be able to get a bus or taxi to get you back home.
